Blacksmith- Montrose

Hours: 7am-5pm, Sun-Sat.

One word: biscuits. Blacksmith has my heart. Nestled on Westheimer in the Montrose District, Blacksmith has established themselves as among the coffee giants of Houston. Supplied by Greenway Coffee Company, Blacksmith is sure to deliver a quality cup  with every order. Their biscuits are scratch made, their Vietnamese Steak and Eggs are a hot special, and their oatmeal and kale salads are nothing to pinch your nose and chew at for my health conscious friends out there. They have bar seating for the solo study crowd, and tables for my #brunchsohard buddies trying to fill another Instagram post.

Catalina- Washington

Hours: 6:30am-7pm Mon.- Fri., 7:30am-7pm Sat.-Sun.

“Though she be but little, she is fierce.” -William Shakespeare

Catalina is quality. If you are looking for a shop that feels like you just walked into a neighbor’s house, warm with invitation and good hospitality, you’ve come to the right place. The coffee is spectacular; they brew Amaya Roasting Co. who prides themselves in roasting responsibly sourced and quality tasting coffee. Not only is the coffee amazing, but the whole Catalina family really does treat you like a guest in their home. The staff is full of smiles and non-judgmental explanations for friends who aren’t too familiar with the difference between a latte and a cappuccino. (It’s all in the milk). If you’re starting a new book, having a great conversation with a friend, or just want to meet a couple of baristas and talk about the deeper and shallower things in life, Catalina hits that spot! For my study seekers, there are no outlets or wifi, so it’s a #treatyoself day when I come here. They really want to facilitate a community which I’m all for!

Tout Suite- EaDo (and Memorial)

Hours: 7am-12am M-F, 10am-12am Sat.- Sun.

Pronounced: ( to͞ot’swētʹ). This place is a blogger’s paradise. The atmosphere sparks a desire to become Instagram famous. The dessert bar enchants you with ~20 different macaron flavors, croissants galore, and crepe cakes that are scrumptious! The brunch/lunch/dinner/snack menu is completely stellar with the chefs whipping up new weekly features like the taco of the week or the stuffed avocado of the week. #yum. And most importantly, the coffee is spectacular. Tout Suite also sports Greenway Coffee Company, so you are sure to get a quality cup of coffee with every sip. Coffee not your thing? One, why are you reading this? Two, they have a bar with local breweries and good wine y’all! Perfect date spot and Houston local fave! They just opened up a new location in Memorial for those not so far out folks! For my study students, they have ample outlets, bar, table, and couch seating. Open late for my night owls! 😉

Paper Co.- Washington Ave/ Near Heights

Hours: 7am-7pm Mon-Fri, 8am-8pm Sat-Sun.

Now I have to show some love to the homies at Paper Co. because this is coffee with a cause! Paper Co. is a non-profit coffee shop that uses their proceeds in order aid homeless brothers and sisters scattered throughout Houston. Another way that Paper Co. gets involved is that they offer a Common Meal where you can donate whatever amount of money to go towards paying a meal for someone who comes in. Paper Co. uses Mueva Coffee Co., a direct trade coffee company to support small farmers participating in the big coffee craze game. The food at Paper Co. is mouth watering, finger licking good. From honey butter chicken biscuits, to smoked brisket, to fish tacos, to hummus or a kale and grapefruit salad, you are sure to leave with a full heart and a full tummy! For a study spot, they have two-seat tables for solo study and long tables for group study. Though limited in quantity, there are outlets for those who require. Paper Co. is close to my heart, and hopefully it will seep its way into your hearts as well.

Cafeza-Washington Ave/ Near Heights

Hours: 7am-10pm Sun-Thurs, 7am-12am Fri-Sat.

Newer to the coffee scene in Houston, Cafeza is becoming a quick favorite of mine! Shrimp tacos, churros, Chance the Rapper, art gallery, good coffee, and great people! Two doors down from the aforementioned Paper Co., Cafeza is in the Near Heights/ Washington Ave district. The food is yummy, the baristas are so friendly, and the music ranges from smooth jazz to whatever the youths are bopping to these days. There is also a patio for those wanting to sip their coffee like a European cafe, and there are ample outlets and tables for those grinding out a couple of essays or two. The place is cozy, cool, eclectic, and fun! When you get a chance, definitely swing on by!
